Fact VS Fiction: The Truth About RFID Tracking

Early forms of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology have been around for more than eighty years now, but it was perfected for commercial use in the 70's. Since its arrival, people have speculated about its use and many have overstated its capabilities and benefits. Because many have been unclear about what RFID is, and what it actually can - and can't - do, there has been more than a little confusion surrounding the technology.

To set the record straight, here's an overview of how RentalWorks QuikScan uses RFID to help you take your inventory tracking and asset management business to the next level:

  1. Real-time inventory tracking
RFID allows you to keep an accurate count of your assets and to capture a wealth of data about each item at every step. Whether you're doing a check-in or check-out of items, or transferring items in and out of multiple warehouses, RFID makes it easier to keep track of your inventory.

  2. Increased efficiency
When used properly, RFID can greatly improve the efficiency of your check-in/check-out process. For example, rather than having to pick up each individual item to scan a barcode, you could quickly and easily scan an entire carton of items marked with RFID tags. However, it's possible to miss items when scanning multiple RFID-tagged items. That's why we recommend that you always make sure you know in advance how many total items are in your order before accepting the scan. You may also need to locate an exception or identify an item that wasn't captured on the first pass, but once you know how to use RFID, there's nothing faster or more efficient.

  3. Capture more data
In addition to the usual RFID EPC (Electronic Product Code) and individual item barcode data, RentalWorks RFID tags also contain a special 5-digit code that's unique to your business. This allows you to ensure that the items you receive are the same items you've checked out and provides additional information to help you filter and process items faster.

  4. Quickly and easily assign RFID numbers
Our RentalWorks QuikScan software even allows you to assign RFID and barcode numbers when you receive new items from a Purchase Order, or when selecting an item with an I-Code that has it's "tracked by" status changed to RFID.  You can also retire and duplicate EPC numbers on the spot, if the RFID tag is damaged.

The bottom line is that RFID technology is faster than using barcodes alone, and it provides better real-time visibility of your inventory - provided you use best practices to implement and deploy the technology properly.

Choosing the right RFID tags, software, antennas, readers - and using best practices - will make all the difference. That's why so many trust our RentalWorks inventory tracking systems for state-of-the-art security and accuracy.
